New Equality Strategic Plan Is ‘Loaves and Fishes’ Plan Says Alliance

Equality & Rights Alliance (ERA) said it that The Equality Authority’s new strategic plan was a “loaves and fishes” plan because it was promising too much with too little. Mark Kelly, spokesperson for ERA and director of the Irish Council for Civil Liberties, said that the Alliance was concerned that in adopting the plan the Board has no effective grasp of the economic reality of the 43% cutback it must live with. While acknowledging that the Board has to make the best of a bad situation, he said that the new plan confirms many of the greatest concerns expressed by civil society and board members who had resigned from the Authority.

Alliance Admires Principled Stance of Equality Chief

Equality & Rights Alliance today said that it admired and fully supported the principled stance taken by Niall Crowley in resigning as Chief Executive of The Equality Authority. The coalition of 71 civil society organisations said that it deeply regretted that Mr Crowley had been forced into this position because of the Budget actions which had effectively rendered the Equality Authority unviable.

Groups Call for Principled Politicians to Stand Up for Human Rights and Equality

On International Human Rights Day (Wednesday 10 December 2008), the Equality & Rights Alliance (ERA) will be calling for principled politicians of all parties to stand up for human rights and equality. A delegation of the Alliance, a coalition which represents 71 civil society organisations, will appear before the Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Equality, Defence and Women’s Rights at 2.15pm on International Human Rights Day (the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the 10th anniversary of the UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders).
