The recommendation that the Irish Human Rights Commission and the Equality Authority are to “fully integrate their facilities, back office and administrative services, and access for citizens” cannot work. More importantly, it will not make the services more accessible for users.
One agency will remain in Dublin. The other is being fast-tracked to Roscrea at a time when decentralisation has been halted for most. Bi-location, staff changes, possible redeployment and a new IT system at least will outstrip any value for money envisaged.
A new country is a confusing enough place for immigrants, asylum seekers, migrant workers, and visitors. Where will they go to in the future? Dublin? Roscrea? Both? Nowhere?
On behalf of the 188 nationalities in Ireland, we are asking politicians to wake up to the attack on equality and human rights in Budget 2009.
